Massage in Schools Programme (MISP)

Let us introduce you to the wonders of the
Massage in Schools Programme(MISP)

Massage makes me feel happy."
A child

Stress-related illnesses in adults and the resultant absence from work cost the UK economy more than £50 billion per year. When health service inefficiencies and welfare benefit payments are factored in, the figure rises to nearly £100 billion a year! In the modern 24-hour society with its pressure to balance work and home life, it’s no wonder many of us are stressed!

Our children haven’t escaped unscathed either and there’s an increasing amount of research and studies that have shown that child mental health issues are on the rise, which can affect their confidence, self-esteem and ability to learn. And that’s where you come in!

As a massage in schools instructor you can make a difference by sharing the gift of positive touch - if you already work in a school you are adding to the lifeskills that your children can learn in the classroom . If you are a complementary practitioner this will add to your customer base and bring a new dimension to your career.

If you have a child leaving school with high self-esteem then the education system has achieved its greatest goal. The Massage In Schools Programme (MISP) helps with this objective."
Roger Brown, OFSTED Inspector, December 2005

What is the Massage in Schools Programme?

The Massage in Schools Programme (MISP) is a clothed, child-to-child massage programme aimed at school children aged 4-12. The programme was created by Mia Elmsäter from Sweden and Canadian, Sylvie Hetu, as a result of their combined passion to ensure that every child in the world experiences positive, nurturing touch every day.

The MISP is:

  • For children 4-12 years old
  • A back, neck, head and arm massage given by the children, to each other
  • Given and received with the child’s permission
  • 10-15 minutes daily routine

What are the benefits of massage in schools?

Studies and observations have shown that by taking part in the MISP children experience a range of positive benefits such as:

  • Children become calmer
  • They have improved concentration
  • They have more confidence
  • Helps children recognise ‘good’ and ‘bad’ touch
  • Children develop better motor skills
  • Teaches children to respect themselves and others
  • Reduces bullying and aggressive behaviour

As the programme happens in a classroom/school setting, teachers benefit from a calmer classroom and improved concentration from the students.

Children enjoy the positive comments made and it’s nice to see children co-operating and treating each other with care”.
